Much of this stems from the still frustrating over-passing by CPU opponents, both too perfect and length short to simulate actual hockey. Specifically, teammates will exhibit better on-man defense, but often become victims of blow-by’s and/or over commitment to a particular zone. Stated improvements in CPU AI are evident…but execute not as they should. ![]() Gear, however, remains buried behind the CHEL leveling up grind. NHL 21 also offers all of the goofy hairstyles from the get-go, so no endless CHEL (online gameplay) grinding to customize coif. ![]() This presents as a nice suite of mad scientist options to truly make a player yours, and – in my instance – the most awkward and arm flailing left defenceman on the planet. Well, you brave souls now have a trade deadline engine.īehind the curtain, NHL 21 offers the widest amount of player customizations yet, down to skating stride, posture, arm movement tendencies, and shot release. I’m certain fans of this mode will disagree. For this reviewer, there’s simply too much going on (repairing bathrooms, build parking lots, increase marketing budgets, five stage coach interviews, etc.) to truly appreciate Franchise mode. It now features a robust trade deadline scenario (a ‘fog of war’ to make decisions less obvious) to simulate the craziness of that period. NHL 21’s Franchise mode remains and is ridiculously over-complicated. Moreover, so much simming is needed to simply progress anywhere in Be a Pro. I tried to be the biggest egomaniac goalie on the planet to keep things interesting, but even that improved little in the way of immersion. Playing Be a Pro is simply not fun the ‘thrill’ of playing for an NHL team just doesn’t shine through (in comparison to The Show, NBA 2K). This executes better on paper than practice, as the mode remains hampered by force fit gameplay to nest these options around. Pay to play, if that’s your thing.īe a Pro received an RPG style facelift, where player interview responses and action decisions impact team, brand and fan chemistry, respectively. In this instance, a mish mash of Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) and NHL Threes (‘HUT Rush’), where players rewarded for fancy skill play in return for coveted HUT currency. To explain and akin to its predecessors, NHL 21’s online universe is where upgrades most evident, notably in new modes offered. Sadly, EA’s NHL barely evolves each year, with only the most discerning player apt to notice true gameplay improvement. NHL 21 is also yet another victim of the disjointed COVID sports season fiasco, meaning rosters (at present) are simply a mess. Meaning – and unless you’re a hockey diehard – there’s little reason to jump into the full priced version of this year’s offering. While I’m not ready to say that’s totally changed as of yet, the concepts of having new ways to break through center ice and create space in the offensive zone do help to freshen things up.With NHL 21 the hockey swan song for current gen consoles, this last foray makes only moderate gains from years prior. I especially feel that way because for so long it has felt like you attack in the same limited number of ways. I have just recently started playing NHL 21, and the new movement provided by the slip/chip/self-pass dekes do add a new layer to skating outcomes so they’re worth labbing with to get a handle on them. The idea of the chip deke and self-pass have a lot of different uses as well, which include passing it to yourself behind the net and slipping around players along the side boards. ![]() Those moves include the Kucherov, the Michigan, the chip deke, flip deke and self-pass. But the development team did add some new moves this year that will need to be studied. The NHL 21 deking system has had a lot of the same moves for years, so a lot of this tutorial is not new information for the long-time fans out there.
